Make adopting a pet a lifetime commitment to the pet. Ensure you have adequate time and resources to properly care for a pet for its lifetime. The purchase price is not the most important aspect of adopting a pet. If you can't afford a purchase price, you probably can't afford the ongoing cost of caring for it.
Do your research! Choosing the breed is the most important part. Consider the characteristics of the breed- disposition, exercise and grooming requirements, health needs, etc.
Adopt a pet in need of a home, or purchase from an ethical reputable breeder. DO NOT purchase from pet stores. Even if a pet store states they acquire the pets from breeders, no ethical breeder would sell through a pet store. The only way we can approach the problems of pet overpopulation is through ethical breeders who are accountable to the pets they produce. Breeders who sell to pet stores are only breeding to make money. They are not breeding to improve the breed, or ensuring the pets have forever homes. If a puppy they produce no longer has a home, it ends up in a shelter. They are part of the problem of pet overpopulation. They are also not tracking the health of the pets by staying in contact with them for the lifetime. They continue to breed animals who may be producing health problems, and have no knowledge because they never see the pet again after 5-8 wks of age.

Pampering is ok, Spoiling is Not! Dogs require structure, limits, training, and lots of attention and love! Pamper your dog with affectionate grooming and a massage. Provide healthy treats and an occassional special doggie treat. Spend extra time in a game of fetch. Throw a doggie party and invite your friends and their dogs. Invite your dog on the couch during family time in the evening. This is pampering, but over indulgence and a lack of rules can create behavioral and health problems.
