Puppy Care and Training

Crate Training

Our puppies are born in our home and are crated with their mother. When they start on solid food, we take them outside to potty several times throughout the day. The puppies start to get used to a routine and will go potty outside but will need crate training upon coming home. Please check our blog for educational information or visit this website Dog Owner's Guide

Health care

Our Cairn Terrier puppies receive dew claw removal, deworming at 3, 5, and 7 wks, the first vaccination for parvo/distemper/adenovirus II/parainfluenza at 6wks, and a vet check for health. They need to receive a vaccination every 2-3 wks until 15-16wks of age. Heartworm prevention can be started at 11wks and their rabies vaccine will be due at 15-16 wks.

Our puppies are AVID microchipped and registration of the chip can be completed for a fee of $15.

risk for communicable disease

Puppies receive passive immunity from their mother's milk. The antibodies present in the mother's milk help protect puppies from disease and infections for the first few weeks of life. The first vaccination is not as effective in contributing to the puppy's primary immunity due to maternal antibodies. However the 2nd vaccination is much more effective in building the puppy's primary immune response. The primary immunity is the puppy's own "real" immunity. It is imperative upon taking puppies home after 8 wks, that you avoid exposure to strange dogs or areas where dogs frequent such as rest areas, gas stations, dog parks, etc. We recommend waiting until after the 3rd vaccination at 11-12 wks to start puppy obedience classes.

obedience training

Puppies can start to learn obedience as early as 8wks of age. They have an accelerated learning capacity through 16 wks of age. This is why it is helpful to start training as soon as possible. They can learn sit, lay down, stay, etc. and although they may have a shorter attention span and may only hold a cue for a few seconds, they are capable of responding to cues. Puppies don't initially learn words, but respond to your body language and vocal tone. The words are then slowly paired with the behaviors and you're well on your way to having a well trained and adjusted dog. Obedience classes after 11wks are a great way for both you and your puppy to learn together. But if you want to start earlier find a good book on obedience training and start preparing before puppy comes home.

Feeding

Canidae food is no longer available in our area. Therefore we have reverted back to Diamond Naturals puppy formula for puppies and chicken & rice formula for adults. For additional information on nutrition, please visit our blog. Feed your puppy three times a day, and adult twice a day. For amounts refer to the package directions based on age and weight.
